The customer support team at Network Communications Inc. starts planning for Customer Service Week in January.

After all, a companywide celebration for 600 takes an enormous amount of planning and coordination. And while the celebration is on a large scale, many of the elements can be incorporated into a celebration of any size.

The festivities start the Friday before Customer Service Week when members of the customer support staff visit all employees to deliver goodie bags. The bags contain an agenda for the week, puzzles, and games such as word finds and crosswords, and a few sweet treats.

During the week there are three catered meals for the entire staff of 600: a Monday morning kick-off breakfast, a Wednesday luncheon, and a Friday afternoon Closing Ceremony complete with an assortment of tempting desserts.

Throughout the week, the entire company is invited to try their skill at a wide range of puzzles and games and all participants are awarded raffle tickets. Then at the end of the week, tickets are drawn and prizes are awarded. Participation in all activities is high, because there are some very exciting prizes in the raffle.

Don’t have the budget for big-ticket gifts? Russell Schuster, Customer Service Week Chairperson, tells us that many of the prizes are actually vendor gifts. So if your company policy restricts employees from accepting gifts, why not collect them for your own Customer Service Week raffle?

Finally, the highlight of the celebration was a fully costumed training movie staring the NCI customer support managers.

Seven screenings throughout the week, including one evening screening for the night shift, ensured that everyone had a chance to see the movie and to enjoy some traditional movie-time treats.

RE:           Budget Request — Customer Service Week

I’d like to host a Customer Service Week celebration for the service staff in our St. Paul and Davenport locations.

Customer Service Week is an international celebration of the importance of customer service and of the people who serve and support customers on a daily basis.

The primary goal for our celebration is to foster a strong sense of teamwork among our on-site, remote, and hybrid staff. By celebrating our successes and increasing trust and communication, our team will be more productive and more resilient in times of stress and upheaval.

By way of background, Customer Service Week has been celebrated since 1987 and in 1992 the U.S. Congress proclaimed Customer Service Week a nationally recognized event. It is celebrated annually during the first full week in October.

Each year, thousands of companies around the globe celebrate Customer Service Week. Last year, they represented all 50 states and over 60 countries. Several companies in our field celebrate. (Insert details from the Who Celebrates web page.)

The cost for our first celebration is $(Insert your total request here). And we will have (Insert number) people celebrating. The cost per person is just $(Insert amount). I can’t think of a more cost-effective way to recognize and reward our service team and to increase morale, motivation, and teamwork.

I plan to provide team-building activities each day, to recognize our top performers for their accomplishments, to thank everyone for their commitment to our customers, and to reinforce the important role that our frontline staff plays in the organization. I will use official Customer Service Week decorations, gifts, stress-relievers, puzzles, and activities from the Customer Service Week website CSWeek.com.

I hope you agree that this is a productive activity for our staff and that you will fund the full $(Restate amount) requested.

Puzzle and Candy Desk Drop

Like many people celebrating Customer Service Week in October, Darlene Loiacono used puzzles from the CSWeek.com website.

She selected one puzzle for each day of the week, and presented them in a goodie bag filled with candy treats and a note which read:

  • Thank you for not SNICKERING when I handed out these puzzles.
  • KUDOS to you for completing them all.
  • You are such a SMARTIE pants for working them out.
  • Congratulations you are a winner and a STAR.

At the end of the week, all of the completed puzzles were submitted to Darlene for a grand prize drawing.

What a sweet way to start the week!

Customer Service Week Proclamation

In a thriving free enterprise system such as ours, which provides consumers with a wide range of goods and services from which to choose, the most successful businesses are those that display a strong commitment to customer satisfaction. Today foreign competition as well as consumer demands are requiring greater corporate efficiency and productivity. If the United States is to remain a leader in the changing global economy, highest quality customer service must be a personal goal of every employee in business and industry.

A business built on customer service understands and anticipates the customer’s needs. It designs goods and services to meet those needs and builds products that perform to customer expectations. It then packages them carefully, labels them correctly, sells them at a fair price, delivers them as scheduled, and follows up, as necessary, to satisfy the customer. This kind of commitment to service leads to customer loyalty and to genuine improvements at the bottom line.

A business will do a better job of providing high quality goods and services by listening to its employees and by empowering them with opportunities to make a difference. Customer service professionals work in the front lines where a firm meets its customers; where supply meets demand. With responsive policies and procedures and with simple courtesy, customer service professionals can go a long way toward ensuring customer satisfaction and eliciting the next round of orders and purchases.

The Congress, by Senate Joint Resolution 166, has designated the week of October 4 through October 10, 1992, as “National Customer Service Week” and requested the President to issue a proclamation in observance of this week.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim the week of October 4 through October 10, 1992, as National Customer Service Week. I invite all Americans to observe this week with appropriate programs and activities.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this eighth day of October, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and ninety-two, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and seventeenth.
