Creative Team Photos

Off-site workers were included in this on-site Customer Service Week celebration through the clever use of technology.

Dairyland Healthcare Solutions started their celebration early. Goodie bags with the week’s agenda, daily puzzles, a pen, and a small treat were distributed on the Friday before Customer Service Week.

Then throughout the week, reps enjoyed a muffin morning, pie and ice cream social, a training seminar, and the return of the popular cube cram in which as many people as possible cram into one cubicle. This year the team beat their previous record of 21-1/2 with a total of 24 people. Just in case you’re wondering about that half, one of the reps was pregnant last year.

Finally, Dairyland created group photos of each of their customer service teams. Some teams include remote employees. To create the photos, one group photo was taken and then the heads of missing team members were added. Everyone received a copy of their complete team as a memento of the celebration.

Can you spot the off-site workers?

Customer Service Week Cruise

The team at Federated Investors celebrated Customer Service Week with a five-day cruise.

The week got underway with a kick off “Bon Voyage Breakfast.” The Sansom Auditorium was transformed into the cruise ship’s Lido Deck. Breakfast was served and the head of sales discussed the importance of excellent customer service.

Throughout the week daily events and activities supported the cruise theme. Staff members dressed in resort casual, visited popular ports of call such as the popcorn bar, had their photos taken with the captain, and even made ship-to-shore deliveries of cakes to business units that support the service team.

Customers Recognize Reps

Many firms and organizations honor individual frontline reps during Customer Service Week. One popular way to do this is with peer-to-peer awards. Another method, which is gaining popularity, is to ask customers to recognize employees they feel provide exceptional service.

To celebrate Customer Service Week, South West Trains, which provides train service to the southwest of London, asked passengers to nominate a member of the staff who had made their travelling experience more enjoyable.

In all, over 1,000 customers sent in paper forms or went online to nominate almost 250 individual employees. Of these, 17 employees were selected to participate in an awards ceremony at which they met one of their nominators in person. An overall winner was also announced at the ceremony.

Daily Skill Goals

Fun, games, teambuilding, rewards, recognition. But is there a place for training during Customer Service Week?

You bet there is. In fact the week provides a great opportunity for your team to recommit themselves to the service mission and to sharpen their service skills.

That’s just what the team at the Orange County Clerk of the Courts in Orlando, FL, did. Each day the team focused on a particular skill and the managers who monitored calls were there to coach, recognize, and reward team members for their focus on the daily skill.

Here’s a rundown of the skills they covered during the week:

  • Greeting: Focus on greeting the customer with a smile in your voice.
  • Listening: Focus on what the customer is really saying.
  • Closing: Focus on all of the elements in a proper closing.
  • Empathy and Courtesy: Show the customer you care by being upbeat, friendly and patient.

And while the team focused on improving their skills there was also plenty of time devoted to a kick-off pancake breakfast, chair massages, service crossword puzzles, service bingo, office Olympics, and other fun activities.

Decorating Contest

Throughout Customer Service Week, the team at the Health Plan of the Upper Ohio Valley enjoyed games, movies, popcorn, prizes, and more. But the one event that really brought out everyone’s creativity was a decorating contest with a holiday theme.

Teams of reps decorated their cubicles for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and other holidays. Some even dressed in costume to compliment the theme.

One terrific example is the Christmas elves. Partitions were wrapped like gifts and the team dressed as Santa’s elves. They even created a set of rules for service elves:

  • Have good elf-esteem
  • Have good elf-confidence
  • Have good elf-respect
  • Don’t be elf-ish
  • Don’t be elf-centered

Decorating Contest

What do Cookie Monster, a swarm of giant bees, and a huge pink ribbon have in common? They were all part of the Customer Service Week celebration at Adecco Staffing’s shared services center in New York.

Michele Lennon tells us that the week was full of activities including a pajama day, ugly sweater day, recognition ceremony, motivational speaker, and a barbecue lunch served by top management. But the highlight was surely the team challenge. Here’s how it worked:

Each of the work teams was assigned a color and challenged to decorate their area with an appropriate theme. The orange team created a fall display with life-sized trees. The yellow team created oversized yellow and black bumble bees in their work area, which was renamed the hive, and the blue team created a Cookie Monster family reunion.

It was a fun challenge, and one which had everyone working together.
